Automotive manufacturers in Illinois, Chicago
At Ford Motor’s assembly plant on the Far South Side and at its Chicago Heights stamping plant, workers are slammed keeping up with demand for Explorers, driving production to record levels last year.
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles’ plant outside Rockford also has set production highs, on the strength of its Jeep Compass and Patriot SUVs and the Dodge Dart. Mitsubishi’s made-in-Illinois vehicle, the Outlander Sport, by contrast, never found a market in North America.
While Ford and Fiat Chrysler’s operations here are robust, both companies face pressure that will influence where they build vehicles. The biggest issue is cost. As the manufacturers report rising sales and profitability, union members want to get rid of a tiered wage system that pays new employees less than veteran workers, who themselves haven’t received a raise in years, as part of new labor contracts.
Ford’s wage and benefit costs are the highest in the industry, averaging $57 per hour, compared with $55 per hour for General Motors and $47 for both Fiat Chrysler and other foreign companies operating in the U.S., according to the Center for Automotive Research.
