As the manufacturers report rising sales and profitability, union members want to get rid of a tiered wage system that pays new employees less than veteran workers, who themselves haven’t received a raise in years, as part of new labor contracts.
Ford’s wage and benefit costs are the highest in the industry, averaging $57 per hour, compared with $55 per hour for General Motors and $47 for both Fiat Chrysler and other foreign companies operating in the U.S., according to the Center for Automotive Research.
