Automotive industry in South Korea
The automotive industry in South Korea is the sixth-largest in the world measured by automobile unit production and the fifth-largest by automobile export volume.
While its initial operations were merely the assembling of parts imported from foreign companies, South Korea is today among the most advanced automobile-producing countries in the world. Annual domestic output first exceeded one million units in 1988. In the 1990s, the industry manufactured numerous in-house models, demonstrating not only its capabilities in terms of design, performance, and technology, but also signalling its coming of age.
In recent years, big automakers have built factories overseas but not at home, one factor in S. Korea’s stagnant employment market
In August 2016, South Korean automakers’ overseas production exceeded domestic production for the first time, statistics show.
According to figures released on Sep. 27 by the Korea Automobile Manufacturers Association (KAMA), the domestic output of seven South Korean companies (Hyundai Motor Company, Kia Motors, GM Korea, Ssangyong Motor, Renault Samsung Motors, Daewoo Bus and Tata Daewoo) between Jan. and Aug. 2016 amounted to 2,773,067 vehicles. During the same period, Hyundai and Kia produced 2,916,840 vehicles at their overseas factories, or 143,773 vehicles greater than the domestic total. While Hyundai’s overseas production has long exceeded its domestic production, this was the first time that overseas production topped domestic production across all of South Korea’s carmakers.
Domestic automobile production has been decreasing since 2011. Over the same period, overseas production has continued to increase and has more than doubled to date. As of last year, Hyundai accounted for 60% of overseas production.
This turnaround resulted from the ongoing construction of factories that accompanies Hyundai and Kia’s expansion into foreign markets and from falling domestic production by carmakers, caused by a simultaneous slump in exports and domestic demand this year.
